I was born in South Korea to parents who were both the first believers in their families. Our family moved to the United States when I was 5 years old in order for my dad to pursue a seminary education and pastoral ministry. I had initially given my life to Christ at VBS when I was 9, and I was always heavily involved in church activities, but I did not really internalize and embrace the gospel until my first year of college during a season of depression.
After making my decision to follow Jesus, I really struggled with finding a church community. As an Asian-American, I always felt like I was a cultural misfit, and I didn’t know how to deal with it. And as a pastor’s kid, I had a lot of bitterness toward the Church. I used to judge other people in the Church as hypocrites, but over time, God allowed me to see more and more clearly how much of a hypocrite I was.
I remember a 90-year-old Taiwanese grandmother from a small Chinese church who would come almost every day to our home in order to bring us food and care for us after the birth of our first child. Her faithful, gracious love helped me to see what it looks like for church members to really love one another selflessly like Christ. Over time, I got involved in the church and even began to proactively serve in their youth and young adult ministry. A short while later, I transitioned from being a teacher to serving as a youth pastor in a small church in Philadelphia.
During my time there, God began to give me a desire to grow in my understanding of His Word. In the spring of 2015, my family and I moved back down to DFW to start my studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. Over the last several years, I have had the privilege of serving as a pastor in several great churches. I’ve also had the greater blessing of being a husband to my wife, Lynn and a father to three amazing kids, Gabriel, Chloe, and Eliana.
